All things green

Spring in NY has sprung, hallelujah! The doldrums of winter have felt everlasting around here so you can imagine my excitement as I wandered around the Union Square greenmarket last week and spied several things green. Ramps! Wild arugula!! The first few bunches of asparagus!!! OH MY!!!!

I nearly squealed with glee as I elbowed my way up to grab the fattest, greenest, smelliest bunch of ramps, which later made their way into a pan sauce for lemon thyme chicken (delicious, and one of the less "chewy" ways to eat ramps I've found), and a bunch of crisp, slightly bitter wild arugula which served nicely as a bed for lemon and herb crusted halibut.

The latter I shared with my friend Katie, for which she endured the smoke alarm going off during preparation, as it always seems to do. For those of you who have not seen my apartment, it is about the size and shape of a postage stamp and the smoke alarm is conveniently located merely steps from the stove. I have determined it is less of a smoke alarm than an "you must be cooking something that requires heat therefore I must go off" alarm. The shrieking as I try to saute or bake my hunger away is getting old. Thank goodness the season of minimal preparation foods in the likes of heirloom tomato salad, BLET sandwiches, lots of fruit, and salad is on the way. Hurray for spring and soon to follow summer!
